Bush 'disappointed' by gay marriage ban's defeat

Foes of Senate amendment decry 'political tool'
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush says he is "disappointed" that a move to effectively ban same-sex marriage was "temporarily blocked" in the Senate, and he is urging the House to take up the matter. (more)

How could this have happened? What does it mean to our families, schools, children, and the church? Perhaps the most important question is "How should Christians respond?"

There can be no compromise. But our response must reflect both God's love and command for obedience to His will.

The battle for the hearts and minds of the generation is not over. It can't be. There's too much at stake.

An Update – and an Encouragement from Dr. Lutzer

In the middle of July 2004, the Senate defeated, by 50 to 48, a measure to bring the Federal Marriage Amendment – an amendment to the Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman – to a vote. Predictably, much of the media framed the vote as “Gay marriage ban goes down to defeat.”

It would be easy to become discouraged and wonder, What’s the use? Yet consider other great moral battles, waged over the course of years. Faithful pro-life activists carry on the fight to save preborn children – with some evidence in recent years that the tide is slowly turning against the scourge of abortion. Charles Colson reminds us of the great Christian statesman William Wilberforce, who launched a lonely campaign two centuries ago to abolish the slave trade in Britain. It took twenty years, but he prevailed. Equally important, says Colson, “the battle so energized the Church that it led to the Second Great [Wesley] Awakening that swept across England and the English-speaking world.”

Few would disagree that the Church today needs awakening! Perhaps, as Colson points out, God in His providence is sharpening and refining us through struggle and adversity. But whatever the ups and downs of battles in the courts and legislatures, debates in the media, and even divisions among God’s people – we must not “lose heart,” as Paul says (2 Cor. 4:1). We must remember that this is not, in the end, about “winning” over our adversaries; it is about touching hurting men and women with Jesus’ healing love.

Let us press on – but let us do so in patience and humility, pointing to Him whose love compels us.
